Sports scholarships
3rd November, 2011
There was good news for three talented Packwood sportsmen recently as they learnt they had been awarded sports scholarships to their next schools. The three boys, all in their final year at Packwood, were assessed for the awards shortly before half-term.
Captain of Soccer, Edward B won a scholarship to Rugby and there were two awards to Shrewsbury – one for outstanding cross-country runner, Freddie F and the other for George H who has excelled at cricket during his time at Packwood.
Ed is a member of the first team for all boys’ sports at Packwood. He has played county tennis for Staffordshire, been invited to the West Midlands regional football trials and attends regular training sessions at Worcestershire County Cricket Club as part of the club’s Emerging Player Programme. George is also in Worcestershire’s EPP and is hoping to progress to the full academy and ultimately to become a county cricketer.
Freddie is a first team footballer and cricketer and exceptional runner. In the summer he represented Packwood at the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) athletics championship and is currently helping the school maintain its position at the top of the Shropshire Young Athletes Cross Country League. He has broken the school cross-country record every year since arriving at Packwood!
These are three exceptionally talented boys who enjoy their sports and work hard, always endeavouring to give their very best and participating with enthusiasm and competitive spirit. They thoroughly deserve their success and no doubt will make every effort to continue to develop their individual skills and to contribute to the success of the sports teams at their new schools.
Over the coming months more schools will be running their sport scholarships and many other final year pupils are busy preparing for them. There is some great natural talent among these children and that, coupled with the hard work and encouragement of the Packwood games staff, should mean further additions to the school’s honours board.
