Internet Safety talk

25th September, 2011

On Friday 23 September Packwood staff, parents and the older pupils enjoyed an excellent informative talk on Internet Safety. The presentation was given by a representative from Childnet International and while promoting the many good and positive sides of the internet also gave a broad insight into the risks and possible dangers of being online.

We learnt about the importance of limiting access to personal information, about how to recognise the signs of cyber bullying and what steps to take against it, and about the importance of maintaining your digital footprint. The talk also covered information on filtering and monitoring software and on downloading music and films and file sharing.

We were introduced to Childnet’s SMART acronym which reminds young internet users to keep personal information Safe; of the potential dangers of Meeting someone they’ve met online; to be wary of Accepting files; to be aware of the need to check that information is Reliable; and to Tell a parent or trusted adult if they feel worried.

Leaflets regarding keeping your child safe on the internet are available from school and if you would like copies please contact Mrs Rigby.

The Internet Safety presentation was the first in a series of talks introduced this term which, over the course of the year, will cover a variety of topics including Boarding, Drugs and Alcohol, Dyslexia/Dyspraxia/Dyscalculia, Revision, and how to help your child with reading and maths.
