Busy March for Packwood fencers

24th March, 2011

Packwood’s Head of Fencing, Mr Weston, has been delighted by another set of stunning performances by his dedicated team of fencers.

The Under 11 Girls’ Epee team travelled to London over the last exeat weekend to compete in the National Schools Championships. They finished as runners up, losing by a single hit in the final to City of London Freemen’s School.  This was a fantastic achievement, proving to the girls that they compete at the highest level. Meeting Olympic champion sprinter, Linford Christie, at the competition was an extra bonus!

The following Sunday the whole ‘barmy army’ helped win the Packwood Epee cup for the first time competing in a closely fought tournament against fencers from all over the country, and as far afield as Japan. One of the fifty visiting fencers, representing Ogaki Fencing Club, was Old Packwoodian, Keishi Oyama.  Victory was a true team effort with ten medals in total won by Packwood fencers. There were two golds (Issy Wythe and Edward Don), one silver (Antonia Barlow-Evans) and seven bronzes (Edward Hurle, Ella Downey, Freddie Houlker, Louisa Jarvis, Georgia Kannreuther and Oliver Holcroft) – many congratulations to all.
