Packwood team win Spelling Bee

23rd March, 2011

During the last week of the spring term four children from 2Class represented Packwood in the local heats of the Times Spelling Bee. The team, enthusiastically and noisily supported by ten of their classmates who went along to join the audience, was made up of Alexander Wythe, Rory Carter-Motley, Thomas Tulloch and Ruby Lavender, who writes:

The first round was a spelling play-off. The Spell master asked each competitor in turn to spell a word.  When you got a spelling right you earned two points for your school, but when you got one wrong you were out. This went on until only one person was left out of all the schools – and it was Rory so he won the Collins medal for ‘last player standing’. At the end of this round Packwood was in second place with 18 points.

The second round was quick-fire and we had a choice of level of difficulty. Each school took it in turns and the competitors had two minutes to get as many correct spellings as possible. Packwood went for medium and scored 32 points. Some of the words we were asked to spell were porous, amoeba, lacklustre, rarefied and cologne.

Our total at the end of the competition was 50 points which meant we won the heat and are going through to the semi-finals to be held next term.
