Sink or swim!
22nd June, 2010
Following on from the success of the May Fair which raised nearly £6000 for charity, Packwood has again been fundraising, this time for Macmillan Cancer Support, by competing in the fourth annual coracle race on the River Severn.
A team of four, captained by Mr Weston and including Mr Dougan, Mr Ford and Mr Nogues known collectively as the Packwood Pirates took to the water last Friday evening, 18th June. They were among a total of 30 teams who met at the Pengwern Boat Club in Shrewsbury to take part in the challenge.
Each member of the team in turn had to paddle their incredibly unstable craft back and forth across the width of the Severn. Apart from Mr Weston tumbling in to the river while trying to get in to his coracle before the race had even begun, the rest of the Pirates stayed dry and successfully completed their widths finishing a creditable fourth in their heat. With only the first two teams from each heat progressing, the Packwood Pirates were (happily) confined to land for the rest of the evening, and the final race was eventually won by CJ Williams Funeral Directors.
Despite their early exit from the event the Pirates enjoyed the occasion enormously and raised over £300 in sponsorship, all of which goes to Macmillan.
