Lacrosse team win Midlands Tournament

8th February, 2010

Packwood Under 13 and Under 12 lacrosse teams travelled to Bedford High School on Saturday 6th February to compete in the Midlands Lacrosse Tournament. The girls were accompanied by a group of parent supporters and by their coach, Sue Draper, who writes:

The Under 13 girls were straight in at the deep end in their first group match against Wycombe Abbey who were nicely warmed up having already played once, but fortunately we proved stronger and won 4-2. The girls were able to maintain a high standard of play throughout the group stages and went on to win against Piper's Corner School (4-0), Malvern St James (4-0) and Bedford High School B team (7-0). In the semi-final they faced Bedford High School A team. The Packwood team played a great game taking a commanding lead from the start and winning 6-0.

After a short rest it was on to an exciting and closely fought final against St Helen's and St Katherine's. Packwood scored a fantastic early goal but despite dogged persistence and having 80% of the possession throughout the game, were unable to get another goal past the opposition keeper. Fortunately the Packwood defence was rock solid and there was never any question of conceding a goal so after a tense, tough match the final score was 1-0 and Packwood had once again claimed the title of West Midlands Champions collecting the trophy for the fourth time in the last five years.

The Under 12 girls also made a very strong start to the tournament winning all their group matches getting stronger and more confident as they progressed. They won victories over St Helen's and St Katherine's (2-0), Bedford High School (2-0) and Piper's Corner School (12-0) before taking on Wycombe Abbey in the semi-final. Packwood maintained their momentum and won 6-0 to take their place in the final where they came up against Godstone. The girls worked well as a team in attack and defence, and asserted themselves, for the third year in succession, as superb champions with a 5-1 win - a tremendous achievement against such big schools.
