Old Packwoodian Cricket Match - the 60’s v. the 70’s
After days and days of bright sunshine, the morning dawned in a haze of chilly drizzle – reminiscent, I’m sure, of many afternoons of Packwood cricket for the brave 22 (or was it 23 or 24!) who had dared to drag their cricket whites, (or faded yellows) out of the trunks they had been residing in for the last 30 years. No-one was quite sure what to expect but Peter Draper (60’s) and James Clarke (70’s) had each gathered together a team of willing volunteers as well as a few who hadn’t quite volunteered … While some settled down to a morning of reminiscing, checking out their old dormitories and looking through old school photographs, the real action began…. The professional cricketers (James Clarke’s team of 70’s Packwoodians) were put in to bat. As their total rocketed thanks to James Clarke and James Jones Perrott the 1960’s “Golden Oldies” decided that they would need to call for reinforcements and rope in Richard Draper (2002) as an eleventh man to save the day, when they came in to bat. Some fine bowling by Tim Roe (not officially of the right generation!) did however lessen the damage and after a wonderful lunch and fortified by some of the Bursar’s fine wine and beer the 60’s team creaked out to bat. Henry Curteis and Peter Clayton made a great start but anyone who could face James Jones Perrott’s bowling deserves mention. Tim Roe and Nick Jenkins put up a fine stand, (both having to retire) and slowly the score crept up towards the 70’s total. Finally, two runs behind, all rested on Wolverhampton policeman, Dickie Dale who, quivering and quaking in his boots, faced the demon bowler in the second last over. With a superhuman effort he swung his bat and connected for a four! Match over – and a great day’s cricket! The quote of the day from one of the 70’s brigade was “God help us if we look like that in 10 years time!” Fiona Bridge Dinner for 2001 Leavers

He then studies Economics under Maynard Keynes at King’s College Cambridge. After service with the British Council (and war service in the Intelligence Corps, rising from Private to Major, ending with the Control Commission in post-war Germany), he returned to the North West in 1948 to join the family business, the Simon Engineering Group of companies. He was for many years a magistrate on the Manchester City bench on the Regional Hospital Board for Lancashire, the Stockport and Buxton Hospital Management Committee, the Council of Manchester University, the governing body of Cheadle Hulme School and a General Commissioner of Income Tax. One of his memories of Packwood was the food – which he
said was “terrible”. One day the fishmonger’s boy fell of his bike and it
was the best thing that ever happened to the food as the fish fell off too,
and it was declared unfit! Anthony Forster is living in France and recently kindly donated to the school a copy of Horace that he was awarded when at Packwood. He writes warmly of the teaching of John Wingate-Saul and Eric Herd. Alexander Hopkinson-Woolley
