Academic curriculum

At Packwood the emphasis is on making learning fun, stimulating and engaging for all. Our ethos is to instil a love of learning in all our pupils and enable them to reach the very best of their individual ability. The children are encouraged to develop enquiring minds, to acquire knowledge, understanding and skills that will help them meet future challenges, and to become independent lifelong learners.

Homepage ISI quote 3The broad curriculum is centred on core literacy and numeracy skills that underpin all other subjects. We believe a solid grounding in English and Maths is fundamental for successful progress across the board. All teachers encourage good standards of English in their lessons and reading is promoted and supported throughout the school. Speaking and listening skills are also developed and in Year 2, Year 4 and Year 6 all pupils take English Speaking Board exams.

Ultimately the curriculum is focused on preparing children for Common Entrance and, for many, scholarships in their final year to enable them to move on to leading independent senior schools including Winchester, Eton, Harrow, Shrewsbury, Cheltenham Ladies' College, Rugby, Tudor Hall and Moreton Hall.

The curriculum aims to inspire and challenge pupils and allow them to experience as wide a range of subjects as possible over the course of their time at Packwood. Pupils benefit from being taught by subject specialists in all areas of the curriculum which, in addition to English and Maths, includes:

• Chemistry • Art • History  • Greek
• Physics • CDT          • Geography • Classics
• Biology • Music • Religious Studies • Latin
• French   • Drama • PE • Study Skills
• ICT  • PSHE • Verbal Reasoning • Current Affairs

As they progress through the school, pupils have the opportunity to participate in national competitions that support and enhance their studies and allow them to pit themselves against other children throughout the country. As well as English Speaking Board exams, these include UK Mathematics Trust challenges, the Townsend Warner History Prize and the Satips general knowledge competition.
