Iceland trip
All of form 1 recently returned from the icy wilds of Iceland and are now busy writing up their Geography fieldwork projects. Our first impression of the country was the gale force winds that met us as we left the airport terminal – so strong that some struggled to keep on their feet! It was a great relief soon to reach and take a swim in the sulphurous, 80 degree waters of the Blue Lagoon, the first of several geothermal swimming pools that we were to visit. more...

Acorns Book Week
Book Heaven in 2011 – that is what Miss Middlemiss called this year’s Book Week in Packwood Acorns. And it has been a packed schedule of book related activities: a visit from a librarian and the mobile library; many guest readers, from Mr Westlake to a four year old; a sponsored read in aid of Readathon which supports seriously ill children throughout the country; a competition to find who can read in the funniest place (winner yet to be announced, but the boy who tucked himself up with a book in one of the baths in Park House must surely be a contender); the Great Acorns Book Swap with donations going to Book Aid International which sends books to schools in rural Africa; an Open Assembly with everyone dressed up as their favourite fictional character, and lots of book writing, reading and making in the classroom. more...

You know there really was a time before PS3 – before Xbox, Wii and MP3. It’s hard to imagine now, but once upon a time children really did grow up without a single silicon chip anywhere near them. Acorns Science Week
Water, ran the prayer Acorns 1 wrote for our Open Assembly last week, is precious, and so we devoted this year’s Science Week to the subject. We learnt where it is found, what we use it for and how it behaves. We dug a dipping pond in the Acorns play area, filled it with water and planted it with marginal water plants. (A slight exaggeration because our wonderful grounds staff did the actual digging and most of the filling, but to hear the Acorns tell it, you’d think they’d created the entire thing using their bare hands. Talk about a sense of ownership!) more...
